And that’s good, the beautiful days are finally coming back! Take advantage of the return of the sun to visit the Eiffel Tower .

The history of the Eiffel Tower

Did you know that the Eiffel Tower was initially only an ephemeral monument, intended to be dismantled a few years after its construction? This is indeed what was planned when drawing up his plans, on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of 1889 .

To mark the centenary of the French Revolution, the Official Journal is organizing a major competition to build a huge tower on the Champ-de-Mars, and it is the engineer Gustave Eiffel who wins, with his Eiffel Tower project.

The construction of the Iron Lady

The construction of the Eiffel Tower began on January 26, 1889, and it was only 2 years, 2 months and 5 days later that the site ended, making this work a real technical feat.

The building then takes the form of an immense tower, composed of 4 beams separated at the base, then meeting at the top. High of more than 300 meters , this new construction connects each of its pylons by metal beams, and fortifies the whole by different floors. And to make the monument appreciable to tourists, large glazed rooms and a bubble-shaped top are installed there. Everything will finally be simplified, to obtain the tower that we know today.

In total, more than 18,000 parts and 2,500,000 rivets were needed, all being manufactured in a factory in Levallois-Perret. More than 300 workers will be requisitioned to build this emblematic tower .

The Eiffel Tower at the heart of the debates

Even before the completion of the construction site, the Iron Lady is not unanimous, and many criticize it for being unsightly. The tower was also destined to be dismantled, 20 years after the Universal Exhibition. But its immediate success calls into question the projects, because more than 2 million visits are recorded just over the duration of the Universal Exhibition.

The dismantling is then quickly forgotten, and since then, the Eiffel Tower has never ceased to seduce, becoming the emblematic historical monument of Paris and France.
