Also known as “the chapel of the rue du Bac”, Notre Dame de la Médaille miraculeuse is a chapel of the 7th arrondissement of Paris. It is located precisely on the site of the former Hôtel de Châtillon, and remains a major place of pilgrimage. Indeed, it receives about 2 million people each year!
This chapel went through several renovations between 1849 and 1930, and some maintenance work was also undertaken in 2009.
Although it does not look like much, it has the particularity of being one of the ten most visited cultural sites in the capital.
What to see in the Chapel ?
The chapel houses mezzanines in each of its side naves. It is rather characterized by a minimalist decoration. Thus it contains some statues, including that of Saint Vincent de Paul. As well as a tribune organ located in the central nave facing the choir.
Among the other striking elements of this religious building, there is a remarkable altar. The Miraculous Medal Chapel welcomes believers at Mass (several are organized every day). But also people who pay attention to our historical heritage.
The medal
This chapel is so mystical because it was the scene, according to the church, of a first presumed Marian apparition to Catherine Labourée on July 19, 1930. This Catholic saint also recounts another apparition on November 27 of the same year. When an oval was formed around the apparition of Jesus’ mother, a voice was heard by Catherine Labourée: “Have a medal struck on this model. Those who wear it with confidence will receive great graces”.
