Come enjoy the Louvre Museum for the start of the school year
Summer is coming to an end, but the opportunities to make great discoveries are still numerous, and are an invitation to disconnect and relax. In Paris, the monuments are an inexhaustible source of learning and cultural discoveries. Among the must-see sites, the Louvre Museum opens its doors to you for the start of the school year.
The short history of the famous Louvre Museum
If the Eiffel Tower is unquestionably the number one monument in the hearts of Parisians and tourists from all over the world, the Louvre Museum is close behind it.
The Louvre Museum in figures
Located in the1st arrondissement of Paris, in the heart of the capital, the Louvre Museum is one of the largest museums in the world. Spread over an area of 60,600 m², this emblematic monument of the City of Light welcomes more than 8 million visitors each year, making it the most visited museum in the world.
There are nearly 35,000 works and objects of art, ranging from prehistory to today. Among the best known, we count the MonaLisa by Leonardo da Vinci, The Venus de Milo, The Winged Victory of Samothrace, or The Wedding at Cana, by Veronese.
The origins of the Louvre Museum
Located in the heart of the Louvre Palace, the Louvre Museum has not always existed. The fortress, built on the initiative of Philippe II, at the end of the 12thcentury , was initially the place of residence of the king, until 1682, when Louis XIV decided to stay at the Palace of Versailles.
The Louvre Palace then hosted the Academy of Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres, as well as the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. The royal collections and the works of various artists are then exhibited.
During the French Revolution, it was then decided that the Louvre would be used as a museum, in order to exhibit the country’s masterpieces. The Louvre Museum then opened its doors on August 10, 1793. After many difficulties related to the history of the nation, the collection grew in size, reaching the 35,000 objects that we have listed today.
In 2008, the works of the Louvre Museum are divided into 8 departments:
- Egyptian Antiquities;
- Oriental Antiquities;
- Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities;
- Islamic Arts;
- Sculptures;
- Paintings;
- Art ;
- Graphic arts.
All these works are distributed in various places in the building: the Pavillon de l’Horloge, the Saint-Louis crypt, the Salle de la Chapelle (which offers a magnificent view of the Louvre Pyramid and the Tuileries Garden)…
