Under the “Directoire”, under the Empire and then until the 19th century, many events were hosted there. The Universal Expositions of 1867, 1878, 1889, 1900 and 1937 took place there. But it was the 1889 Universal Expositions that marked the site ! Since it was the one where Gustave Eiffel built the Eiffel Tower on the Champ-de-Mars esplanade.
Today, with its vast central lawn alleys and 780 metres long, the Champ-de-Mars is home to concerts, exhibitions and fireworks. Every July 14 there is a major classical music concert and the famous Eiffel Tower fireworks display.
